I finally got the opportunity to check out the Toronto punk club Hard Luck on Dundas west of Bathurst Thursday night. New Damage Records had a new band up from Detroit called Wilson playing a 40 minute set and asked if I wanted to tag along.
Things I noticed.
1. The club was honestly pretty cool (for a punk club). I always find tall cans of Molson Canadian a nice touch.
2. The sound was not bad considering the venue reminded me of a legion hall.
3. Things were on time!
9:40 Wilson takes the stage with the usual “Toronto…Blah…Blah”
9:40:05 Wilson rips out the first beats of loudness.
Frontman Chad Nicefield has tons of energy for a dude who does not appear to be a runner. At first glance I thought Nicefield looked like Zach Galifianakis, maybe they’re cousins.
The energy was not lost through the entire set keeping the audience engaged right through a blown bass amp. Nicefield took the opportunity to tell a tale where his Grandfather swam from Windsor Ontario to Detroit and started a family that eventually led to his birth.
Without an amp the band decided to play on knowing their set time was going to run out. 1 minute later a new head arrived, the bass was tuned and the energy of the room went up again as the full band was back.
Overall, if you like your shows that have hardcore, puck and screamo you should check out Wilson.
